Why Your Brand Is Invisible to ChatGPT (and How to Fix It)

When someone asks an AI assistant “what’s the best tool for X”, it names three to five brands and they pick one. We measured 24 software categories and found the market leader is frequently not the brand the AI names: Shopify gets named less often than WooCommerce, and Close.com — a real CRM — shows up 0% of the time. If the AI never names you, you’re invisible to a fast-growing slice of buyers, and classic SEO does not fix it. The reason is almost never your markup — it’s authority: answer engines name the brands that other trusted sources write about and link to. Here is how to diagnose it and climb.

Steps
  1. Measure where you actually stand. You can’t fix what you can’t see. Run the real buyer-intent questions for your category across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini and get three numbers: your visibility score (how often you’re named), your share of voice vs competitors, and which sources the engines cite. This is your baseline.
  2. Read the citations, not just the mentions. Look at which sources the engines pull from when they answer in your category — usually comparison articles, directories, docs and community threads. Those sources are the real leverage: being present in them is what gets you named.
  3. Fix the technical floor (but don’t expect miracles). Clean structured data, an llms.txt file, FAQ schema and answer-first content make you easy to parse. This is necessary but not sufficient — perfect markup with zero mentions still scores zero.
  4. Earn authority where the engines already read. Get named in the roundups, directories and communities the engines cite in your category. A mention alongside the established players — even without a link — raises the odds you get surfaced. This, not more pages on your own site, is what moves the number.
  5. Publish your own citable data. Answer engines prefer primary sources. Original, measurable content — an honest comparison, a small study, real numbers nobody else has — earns citations because it’s the thing other articles quote. Owned data compounds.
  6. Re-measure and double down. Track the score over time and see what actually moved it (a specific roundup? a backlink? a study?). Repeat the thing that worked. Authority compounds over weeks, not days.
Frequently asked questions

Isn’t this just SEO?

No. You can rank #1 on Google and still never be named in the AI’s answer — it’s a separate, more concentrated game where often only a few brands get mentioned at all. This is called AEO (answer-engine optimization) or GEO (generative engine optimization).

Why is a smaller brand named when the market leader isn’t?

Because AI answers reflect what’s written about and linked to, not market share. A smaller brand that’s covered in the right comparison articles and communities out-ranks a bigger one that isn’t.

How fast can my AI visibility change?

Authority compounds over weeks to months, not days. The fix is earning mentions and citations from trusted sources, which takes consistent effort rather than a one-time change.

Do I need a subscription tool to track this?

For continuous week-over-week tracking, a subscription makes sense. For a one-off snapshot of where you stand right now, a pay-per-use report works without a contract.
