What is AEO vs GEO?

AEO and GEO describe the same discipline from two angles: AEO frames it around the answer the user receives, GEO around the generative engine that composes it. In practice teams use the terms interchangeably.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) puts the emphasis on the answer: make sure that when an answer engine responds, your brand is in it. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) puts the emphasis on the generator: make sure the model that generates answers surfaces you. Same goal, slightly different framing.

Some practitioners draw a fine line — AEO for direct-answer features (featured snippets, People Also Ask, AI Overviews) and GEO for open-ended generative chat — but the measurement and the work are the same: track whether engines name and cite you, and build the authority that makes them.

Do not spend energy policing the vocabulary. Pick one term, define it for your team, and focus on the metrics (visibility, share of voice, citation rate) that are identical either way.

Frequently asked questions

Should I say AEO or GEO?

Either — they are widely used as synonyms. Choose the one your audience recognizes and stay consistent.

Is there any real difference?

Only in emphasis. Any substantive difference people draw (direct-answer features vs open-ended generation) still resolves to the same measurement and authority work.
