What is GEO vs SEO?

SEO optimizes to rank in a list of search links; GEO (generative engine optimization) optimizes to be named and cited inside a single AI-generated answer. They share foundations but reward different things.

SEO and GEO both reward quality content and authority, so good SEO is a head start. But the win condition differs. SEO can succeed with a page-one ranking a user scrolls to; GEO succeeds only if the model includes you in the one answer it composes — there is no second page and often no list at all.

The practical differences: SEO leans on keywords, backlinks and on-page signals for a specific page; GEO leans on entity authority (who you are known to be across the web) and on being present in the sources engines retrieve and trust. Markup and structure matter for both, but they are rarely the reason an engine does or does not name you.

The right stance is not to choose. Keep doing SEO for the links and the crawlable foundation, and add GEO measurement and authority work for the AI answers — because a rising share of category research now happens inside a chat, not a results page.

Frequently asked questions

Does SEO still matter if I do GEO?

Yes. SEO builds the crawlable, linkable foundation GEO depends on, and plenty of buyers still use classic search. GEO is an addition, not a replacement.

Can good SEO hurt my GEO?

Rarely directly, but tactics that game rankings without building real authority do nothing for GEO, because answer engines weight trusted sources and entity reputation over keyword optimization.
