What is Zero-Click Search?

A zero-click search is one where the user gets their answer directly on the results page or in an AI answer and never clicks through to a website — increasingly the default in AI search.

Answer engines and AI Overviews resolve many questions in place, so the click that used to flow to a website never happens. Zero-click is not new — featured snippets started it — but generative answers accelerate it, because the synthesized response often fully satisfies the query.

For brands this reframes success: a mention or citation inside a zero-click answer still builds awareness and preference even without a visit, so AEO measures "were we named" rather than only "did we get the click". The traffic that does come is increasingly from being the cited source.

The strategic response is to be present in the answer for discovery and to target the deeper, higher-intent queries where users still need to click through to act.

Frequently asked questions

Is zero-click search bad for my business?

It reduces some traffic, but being named or cited in a zero-click answer still shapes awareness and preference. The goal shifts from winning the click to winning the mention — and the citation that can still earn a click.

How do I win in a zero-click world?

Be the brand the answer names and the source it cites, and reserve deeper content for high-intent queries where users must click through to complete a task.
