What is Citation Rate?

Citation rate is how often an AI answer engine links to or attributes your content as a source when it generates an answer, as opposed to merely naming your brand.

There is a difference between being mentioned and being cited. An engine can name your brand from memory, or it can cite your page as the source it drew the answer from. Citation rate measures the second — and citations are more durable, because they reflect the engine retrieving and trusting your actual content.

A high citation rate signals that your content is both discoverable to the engine (crawlable, well-structured, present in the retrieval set) and authoritative enough to be used. It is the metric most directly improved by publishing the specific, citeable content that answers a question better than anyone else.

Because citations often carry a visible source link, they can also drive referral traffic — making citation rate one of the few AEO metrics with a direct click-through payoff.

Frequently asked questions

How do I increase my citation rate?

Publish specific, well-structured content that answers a real question better than existing sources, make it machine-readable (clean HTML, schema, llms.txt), and earn the external references that put you in the engine’s trusted retrieval set.

Is a citation better than a mention?

Usually yes — a citation means the engine retrieved and attributed your content, which is more defensible and can send a referral click, whereas a mention can come and go with the model.
