What is Share of Voice (AI Search)?
Share of voice in AI search is the percentage of all brand mentions in AI answers for your category that belong to you — a measure of category dominance, not just presence.
Also known as: AI Share of Voice, SoV
Visibility tells you whether you are named; share of voice tells you how big your slice is. If an answer engine names five brands in your category and one of them is yours one time in ten, your share of voice is low even if your raw visibility is non-zero.
Share of voice is the metric that exposes a category leader. In many categories one brand is named in a large majority of answers and everyone else fights over the remainder — so improving share of voice means displacing the incumbent in the sources the engine trusts, not just publishing more.
Tracked over time and against named competitors, share of voice turns AEO from a vague "are we visible" question into a scoreboard you can move.
How is AI share of voice calculated?
Count every brand mention across a set of category prompts, then divide your mentions by the total. It is usually reported per engine and as a blended figure.
What is a good share of voice?
It is relative to your category. The useful target is beating the specific competitors you lose deals to; in concentrated categories the leader can hold well over half, so early gains come from reaching parity on the prompts that matter most.
